Our Vision

A Christ-Centered and Classical Education

Christ-Centered
In all its levels, programs, and teaching, Cornerstone seeks to teach all subjects as parts of an integrated whole with Scripture at the center (II Timothy 3:16).  Cornerstone Classical School assumes all students are created in the image of God, wonderfully and fearfully knit together, with their own academic strengths and weaknesses that will develop at different rates and reveal individual passions (Matthew 28:18-20, Matthew 19:13-15).  Cornerstone places its trust in a true, good and beautiful Creator who willingly sacrificed himself for our sins.

Classical
In all its levels, programs, and teaching, Cornerstone seeks to:
Encourage all students to develop a love for learning and live up to their academic potential
Provide an orderly atmosphere conducive to attainment of Cornerstone’s goals
Emphasize in all subjects:
Grammar: The fundamental rules and particulars of each subject
Logic: The ordered relationships of particulars in a subject and between subjects
Rhetoric: How the grammar and logic of each subject may be clearly expressed  and applied

Admissions

Standards

Cornerstone Classical School believes that parents have the biblical responsibility to educate and train their children. Cornerstone serves families by providing an academically challenging, Classical education based on a Christian worldview with the intentional goal of building the academic knowledge and personal faith of each individual student. Cornerstone seeks likeminded families with academically able children who demonstrate the ability to succeed in its rigorous academic environment. Parents should carefully examine the Cornerstone Statement of Faith, established by the board of directors. This document forms the foundation of Cornerstone’s spiritual and educational programs.

Kindergarten

Students entering Kindergarten must be at least five years old on or before September 1 of the school year they wish to enter. After completion of the application, a Kindergarten readiness assessment will be conducted. Students will be evaluated for basic knowledge of items such as shapes, colors, the alphabet, writing their name, counting, and following simple directions. As part of the admissions evaluation, the school requires potential Preschool and Kindergarten students to attend an Observation Day. These are scheduled each year. Make up Observation Days will be scheduled if necessary.

Grammar School, Middle School, and High School

Students entering Grade One must be at least six years old on or before September 1 of the school year they wish to enter. Complete grade cards from previous schools attended, and standardized test scores, when available, will be reviewed by Cornerstone. All students will be given a preparedness test and an interview to ensure they are academically prepared to succeed in the grade for which they are seeking entrance. Students will be accepted based on their academic standing, desire to excel academically, and their goal to grow in their understanding of Christ. To successfully learn and benefit from the challenging academic environment at Cornerstone, students should have no learning disabilities or prior behavior concerns.

Steps

Step One: Learn more about classical education at Cornerstone.
Schedule a tour of the school or visit a Parent Preview Day. During this tour, parents will have the opportunity to witness classes in session and ask questions about the benefits of Classical education. Please call 785-643-4460 to schedule a tour of Cornerstone with the school’s Headmaster. After the tour, families are encouraged to pray about the important decision of educating their children at Cornerstone.

To learn more about classical education and how it differs from traditional Christian and public education, we recommend The Lost Tools of Learning by Dorothy L. Sayers and An Introduction to Classical Education: A Guide for Parents by Dr. Christopher Perrin.

Cornerstone parents host Open Houses which are great opportunities to meet current families and learn more about the school. Call the office for dates and times.

Step Two: Submit an Application
Cornerstone’s receipt of the completed application begins the formal application process. Each student being considered for admission to Cornerstone must have a completed student information page for application. Each applicant for Grades One through Eight must submit complete grade cards from previous schools and standardized test scores. Homeschool students should include a summary of coursework and any standardized test results.

Step Three: Family Interview
Once the application is received, the Headmaster will schedule a time to meet with both parents and student(s) applying to Cornerstone. During the interview process, discussion will take place to allow both the family and Cornerstone to learn more about each other’s educational and spiritual goals.

Step Four: Academic Assessment
The Cornerstone administrator and the faculty will evaluate the submitted grades and standardized test scores from previously-attended schools. In addition, transferring students will be given an assessment to confirm that they are academically prepared to enter the grade level for which they seek entrance. Depending on the assessment, previous grades and standardized test scores the parents may be asked to have their student enter at a lower or higher grade than that for which they are seeking acceptance.

Step Five: Enrollment
Once the previous steps have been satisfactorily completed, parents will receive a letter of acceptance or denial. With the letter of acceptance, enrollment contracts will be sent. Enrollment is official once the contracts are returned and the enrollment fee is paid.
